Call it Comply

Two products launch in October. Five names have been tried in three months, the current one has been misheard six different ways in your own meetings, and its second half means everything except the Construction Industry Scheme. There is a name one letter short of the plainest word in the trade. It is the stem of compliance, comply and complete, nobody in UK construction or tax is using it, and compl.co.uk was registered yesterday.

Recommendation: ComplCompl Solo · Compl Hubby Vallacompl.co.uk in hand12-expert council · 5 SepPrepared by Greg Dickson
01The decision

One stem, two products, one promise.

The subbie stays right with HMRC. The contractor can prove the whole chain is compliant. Both of them can say the name to each other on site, and the design makes sure they type it the same way.

Name the platform Compl. C-O-M-P-L, said “comply”, exactly as Hnry is said “Henry” (their own site: “pronounced ‘Henry’ - we just dropped the ‘e’”). Products: Compl Solo (the mobile app for self-employed subcontractors) and Compl Hub (the web platform for contractors and their bookkeepers), with Compl Enterprise later. Keep Valla where it already works, as Sam’s group and the legal entity: Compl is a trading name of Valla CIS Limited. Retire “Valla CIS”, “Vallaci”, “Voila”, “Carbon” and “CIS Portal” as anything a customer sees.

This is not a taste call. Yesterday Khristina said the team had tried “hundreds of options and nothing works better”, asked for ideas, and offered a prize for a good name. The evidence below is the answer to that request: what the current name does in the wild, what the alternative does, what the branding literature says about a truncated stem, and what a twelve-expert council said when it compared Compl with the plain verb, with Valla CIS and with Voila.

Two gates before adoption, plus housekeeping

Gate A, the customer test (Mark Ritson’s condition). Thirty subbies and ten bookkeepers, blind, three names. Hear it once, spell it back, say it back, recall it next day, give three associations, pick a favourite. Compl ships if it wins recall and its spell-back is caught by the design (see the pairing rule), not if everyone types a Y and we shrug. Gate B, clearance. A trade mark attorney searches COMPL, COMPL SOLO and COMPL HUB in classes 9, 35, 36 and 42, with named checks on the “Compl-” and “Comply-” brands in compliance tech, and files the word mark plus a stylised mark. A misspelling generally carries distinctive character; whether this one does is the attorney’s call. Housekeeping. Register compl.uk and the five .co.uk variants that were free on 5 Sep; open an approach on comply.co.uk, the misspelling, which a third party has parked since 2018 and which expires 24 October 2026.

What changes on Monday
  • Store listings renamed during review: Compl Solo: CIS invoicing.
  • Handles claimed: @compl if available, else @complsolo, @complhub, @getcompl. “Compl Ltd” reserved at Companies House while it is free.
  • compl.co.uk is held (Greg, Namecheap): auto-renew on, transfer lock on, registrant moved to Valla CIS Limited once the name is adopted. Domains bought today (all free at Nominet on 5 Sep): compl.uk, complsolo, complhub, complapp, trycompl, getcompl .co.uk. An approach opened on comply.co.uk.
  • Wordmark and tokens reconciled with Solo’s existing sunrise theme; the missing letter drawn as the device.
  • Landing page on compl.co.uk live two weeks before go-live, as Khristina asked.
02Where the name stands

Five names in three months.

A name that keeps moving is a name nobody is sure of. Every week it moves is a week without social handles, a logo, a domain or a landing page. Compl is the first candidate with a domain registered for it.

“Look, Sam, our creativity… it was like hundreds of options and nothing work better. Greg, if you will have any ideas, please share… I think we will provide some price for good name.”Khristina Stetska, same call

The brief confirms what is blocked: “Brand: Solo as a standalone brand. Design tokens and the sunrise visual theme are ready; a truck illustration set is in production.” “Landing page / domain: status to confirm.” Both store listings are in review under a working name. October is the hard go-live and Khristina wants the site and social presence live at least two weeks before it.

The cost of not deciding

  • Social accounts cannot be created (Khristina, 4 Sep).
  • Store listings will need re-submission if the name changes after approval.
  • Every design asset made under a working name is rework.
  • The contractor-invite flywheel needs a name a contractor can type into WhatsApp.
03The radio test, failed in the wild

Heard on the call.

Marty Neumeier’s test for a name: will most people be able to spell it after hearing it spoken? Here is what two meeting transcribers and the marketing lead actually wrote down when the current company name was said out loud.

Valla CIS

This is not a dig at anyone’s accent or software. It is the point. Solo will be recommended out loud: on site, in a van, in a Facebook trade group voice note, in a TikTok, on Fix Radio. The person hearing it has to type it into an app store. Six renderings from two meetings is the radio test failing with your own data, before a penny of media has been spent.

Say “Compl” to the same transcriber and it comes back “comply”: a real word every tradesperson has read on a Building Regs notice, a gas certificate and an HMRC letter. That is the good news and the caveat in one. Greg himself typed the name as “Comply” on first hearing. The design has to catch that Y, and section 06 shows how.

Why this matters more for Solo than most apps

The brief says contractors invite their subcontractors onto the platform and that invite loop is “an acquisition channel that ads should complement, not duplicate”. An invite loop runs on word of mouth. Word of mouth runs on a name that survives a mouth. Compl survives the mouth; the spelling is a design job.

04The case against the current name

Why “Valla CIS” fights you.

Four separate problems, each verified on 5 September 2026. Any one of them is survivable. Together they mean paying to teach the market a name that then points somewhere else.

4a. “Valla” is already taken in the mind

valla.uk is Valla Ltd (Scottish company SC658140, incorporated March 2020): an SRA-authorised legal-tech platform for workplace disputes and employment tribunals. It ranks first in Google GB for “valla”, with its Trustpilot page, a Reddit thread and its LinkedIn page underneath. Both brands sit in the employment-status world; Solo’s onboarding includes an employment-status assessment. That is a genuine confusion vector, not a theoretical one.

Google GB’s autocomplete for “valla” is Valladolid. In Spanish “valla” is a fence or a hurdle. And “Valla” is Sam’s property group (Valla Homes, Valla Land, Valla Property): a fine name for a developer, and a strange name for a plumber’s invoicing app.

4b. “CIS” means everything except the Construction Industry Scheme

AcronymFinder lists 269 meanings of CIS. Ask Google GB what people type after “cis” and the scheme does not appear in the top ten. For a Russian or Ukrainian speaker, CIS is the Commonwealth of Independent States, the post-Soviet bloc Ukraine left; Google’s own autocomplete for “valla cis” includes “что такое cis” (“what is the CIS”). In the UK, CIS was the Co-operative Insurance Society for a century (sold to Royal London in 2013) and is CIS Security, a 3,000-guard London firm, today.

There is also a live distribution problem. Since 2023 X has treated “cis” and “cisgender” as slurs; by May 2024 posts containing the word carried an interstitial warning and reduced visibility. A handle or post with those three letters in it is arguing with a moderation filter before it argues with a customer.

4c. It is the category cliché

HMRC lists around a hundred recognised CIS software suppliers. Nearly every one of them is “CIS plus a noun”, and the newest entrants copy the pattern:

CIS ManagerCISassistCIS PortalCISDeskeasyCISCIS-ConnectCIS4EMAble CISSledgehammer CISCIS DatabaseCIS Submission Prociscalculator.comValla CISCompl

Alexandra Watkins’ SCRATCH test fails “Valla CIS” on Copycat (resembles competitors’ names) and Curse of Knowledge (speaks only to insiders). Al and Laura Ries put it more bluntly in The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding: “one of the fastest routes to failure is giving a brand a generic name.” A name built from the category’s acronym cannot own the category; it can only join the queue.

4d. It is hostage to HMRC

Naming a company after a government scheme ties the brand to that scheme’s fortunes. CIS was reformed in April 2024 (VAT added to the gross-payment test) and again in April 2026 (nil returns, immediate removal of gross status in fraud cases). If CIS is ever renamed, simplified or folded into Making Tax Digital, the company name ages overnight. Solo already does more than CIS: invoicing, expenses, quarterly reports, right-to-work, status assessment. The name should be bigger than the scheme.

05The case for the proposed name

Why Compl wins.

Not because it is clever. Because it is the plainest word in the trade cut one letter short, which is exactly the move that turned Integrated Electronics into Intel, and because in this market it is empty.

The Intel move

Ries: cut a generic in half and you get a short, distinctive, ownable name. Intel is “Integrated Electronics” with the back cut off; Robert Noyce thought it “sounded sort of sexy”. Compl is the shared stem of compliance, comply and complete. It says the job without being the dictionary word.

More protectable than the word

The first council scored the plain verb Comply 2 out of 5 on protectability. EUIPO’s examination guidelines say that “as a rule, misspellings endow the sign with a sufficient degree of distinctive character”. Compl is a coined form, filed as a word mark. The attorney confirms; the odds are materially better.

Empty market, free estate

Checked 5 Sep: no app named Compl in the GB App Store; no COMPL LTD at Companies House (the exact company name is available, unlike COMPLY LIMITED, taken since 2002); nobody owns the “compl” search results. compl.co.uk registered 4 Sep; compl.uk and five .co.uk variants free.

Plain trade English, said aloud

The brief’s tone rule is “plain trade English, dry humour welcome, zero fintech buzzwords.” Spoken, Compl is a word every subbie has read on a gas certificate and an HMRC letter. Two syllables. The spelling is the one job the design has to do, and it can.

One promise, both sides

“Send it through Compl.” “Are you on Compl?” “Your contractor uses Compl. Join free.” The subbie stays right with HMRC; the contractor can prove the whole chain is compliant. One masterbrand carries a two-sided platform without a hyphen.

The missing letter is the mark

A wordmark that stops one letter short is a device in its own right: the name does the first part, you do the last. It extends cleanly: Compl Solo, Compl Hub, Compl Enterprise, “Compl with…” as a content series. It works on a van door, a hi-vis, an app icon and an invoice footer.

Precedent, and the caveat

The closest precedent is in this exact market. Hnry is “Henry” with the e dropped (“because vowels are expensive, and often unnecessary”, says their own naming post), and it carried a sole-trader tax brand to 60,000 customers and a stadium name. The caveat travels with it: Hnry needed roughly nine years and NZ$100m of media to make the spelling second nature, and in the UK its brand search is still about 300 a month. Truncations own categories too: Intel, FedEx, Ikea. Real English words do too: Wise dropped “Transfer” in 2021, Pie is a free UK tax app with 100,000 downloads that names builders as a segment. The caveat is the other kind of missing letter: the “disemvoweling” of Flickr (2004, because flicker.com was not for sale), Tumblr, Grindr and Scribd is now widely called dated, and Flickr later paid for the domain it lacked. Compl is not that. It drops a final letter, not an internal vowel, and “compl.” is a real dictionary abbreviation for complete and complement. Design it like Intel, not like Tumblr: a serif, lowercase, no wink.

The cautionary tale runs the other way too: Mondo became Monzo after a legal challenge, choosing from 12,000 public suggestions. Do the clearance first, once, and the name never has to move again.

The one sentence for Sam

Valla is the group. Compl is the product. A property developer’s name on the holding company, a tradesman’s word, cut short, on the app.

The story in the name (Greg, 5 Sep)

“We took the Y out of comply. Because it just happens.” The missing letter is the product promise: the CIS deduction shows before the invoice is sent, the statement lands, the pot fills. Nobody has to ask why. One line for the About page, the launch video and the answer to “is that a typo?”. Counsel should read it once against the Claims Register, since “it just happens” describes what the product does and must not read as a promise about tax outcomes or filing.

06Black hat

The honest risks, and what we do about them.

A naming rationale that hides the downsides gets found out by the first attorney it meets. These are the real ones for Compl, and the first three are all the same fact seen from three angles: the missing letter.

RiskWhat is actually true (5 Sep 2026)Handling
Looks like a typoAlexandra Watkins’ SCRATCH test has a named sin for this: Spelling-challenged, looks like a typo. Compl trips it. “compl.” is also a working abbreviation in dictionaries and code (the C++ keyword compl).Never set “Compl” alone in small type; pair it with the product word or the line (Compl Solo, “Compl. Sorted.”). Tell the story once in launch copy (“We took the Y out of comply. Because it just happens.”) and move on. The wordmark makes the truncation look deliberate: serif, lowercase, the missing letter ghosted.
Pronunciation ambiguityWritten “Compl” can be read “com-pull”, “compel” or as the start of “complete”. The intended reading is “comply” (confirmed 5 Sep). Hnry has lived with the identical problem since 2017 and answers it in one line on its own site: “pronounced ‘Henry’ - we just dropped the ‘e’”.Do what Hnry does, once, everywhere: a pairing line that carries the sound (“Compl. Get paid. Get on.”), the name spoken in the first three seconds of every audio and video asset, the store subtitle “CIS invoicing”. Measure say-back and spell-back in Gate A.
Misspelling leakPeople who hear “Compl” type “comply”. comply.co.uk is held by a third party (registered 2018 via 123-Reg, parked, expires 24 Oct 2026). comply.com is a US regtech. “Comply – Invoice & Wallet”, a Nigerian freelancer app, appeared in the GB store in July 2026.Open a purchase approach on comply.co.uk now and set an expiry watch for 24 Oct. Own the “comply app”, “comply solo” and “compl solo” search pages from launch. The product word in the store name (“Compl Solo”) keeps the misspelling from landing on someone else’s app.
Dated trendThe Flickr / Tumblr / Grindr / Scribd vowel-drop of 2004–2012 is now widely called dated; commentators note startups “choosing normal names again”.Compl is a stem, not a vowel-drop, and stems have a different pedigree (Intel, FedEx). The design carries the difference: no “r” wink, no lowercase-tech gloss, a serif with weight.
Busy “Compl-” stem in compliance techComplAi (Oslo), Complir (Y Combinator 2026), Comp AI, COMPL-AI (an ETH open-source project), Complyport, ComplyAdvantage, COMPLY (comply.com). compl.com is a parked marketplace domain from 2001; compl.io was registered privately in May 2026; compl.ai belongs to Flight Centre Travel Group.Different goods, different buyer, different channel. The attorney runs named conflict checks in classes 9, 35, 36 and 42. None of these is in UK construction or tax; none is spelled Compl.
Trade mark register unreadThe IPO search sits behind a bot challenge and could not be read by us on 5 Sep. EUIPO guidance favours misspellings; the UK IPO can still object where a misspelling is phonetically identical to a descriptive word and adds nothing.Attorney clearance before the store listings are renamed. File the COMPL word mark, a stylised mark, and COMPL SOLO and COMPL HUB. Describe the goods as invoicing and payments software for the construction trade. The attorney rules on registrability, not this document.
Search noiseGoogle GB autocompletes “compl” to complaint, compliment, compliance, complement, complete; “compl app” to “complete appliance…”.Brand search will be “compl solo” and “compl app” once seeded; seed them, plus the store listing, from day one. Nobody searches “valla cis” either; today its autocomplete is “valla cis limited” and a Spanish phrase about the West Bank.
Audience fitSubbies do not wake up wanting to comply. They wake up 30% short. The masterbrand promises the outcome; the product copy sells the sizzle: “Invoices contractors actually accept.” “Know where your CIS money went.” “Free to start. No card.” Compl is the sign-off, never the headline.
Not a legal opinion

Everything in this table about trade marks is a description of how the registers and the Act work, checked against published guidance. Whether COMPL in any form can be registered for these goods is a call for a trade mark attorney after a clearance search. Budget for that before the store listings are renamed.

07Brand architecture

How the names sit together.

A masterbrand, two products, one endorsement. Nothing hyphenated, nothing in capitals, and the acronym lives in the descriptor line, never in the wordmark.

cmply

Descriptor lines

How it sounds on site

“Send it through Compl.” · “Are you on Compl? I’ll invite you.” · “Compl says I’m on 30%, that’s why.” The name should be usable in a sentence by a groundworker without irony, and it is: it sounds like a word he already knows.

08Voice & message

Say it like a site foreman, not a fintech.

Drafts to test, each one checked against the Claims Register before it goes near an ad. The messaging pillars in the brief already work under the new name; they simply have a name to hang off, and a name that needs its sound cued.

Compl. Sorted.Compl. Get paid. Get on.Invoices contractors actually accept.Know where your CIS money went.Still on 30%? That’s your money.Free to start. No card.Your contractor uses Compl. Join free.We took the Y out of comply. Because it just happens. No why. It just happens.

Three rules the council added

  • The pairing rule. For Solo the word is always paired with a relief word or a benefit line: “Compl. Sorted.” “Compl. Get paid. Get on.” The pairing steers the name from Ruler to Caregiver and heads off “comply with what?”.
  • The cue rule. Every audio and video asset says the name in the first three seconds. Every store listing carries the product word and “CIS invoicing”. The spelling is taught by repetition, the way Intel taught “inside”.
  • The copy rule. For Solo the name is the sign-off, never the headline. Headlines carry the pain: “Still on 30%? That’s your money.” The strategic enemy is the shoebox of receipts and the once-a-year refund shop, never HMRC and never a named competitor.

Tone rules (from the brief, kept)

  • Plain trade English. Dry humour welcome. Zero fintech buzzwords. The foreman who has seen it all: dry, unimpressed by HMRC, on your side.
  • Rate-specific copy goes only to the matching segment; never assume a universal 20%.
  • Never denigrate accountants: Plus sells accountant review and accountants are a future channel.
  • Price-led copy says “+VAT”.
Red lines (Claims Register)

No tax-outcome promises. No “HMRC-approved” (HMRC recognition, once earned, means “can file a valid CIS300”, nothing more). No Making Tax Digital filing claims until production credentials are confirmed. No employment-status guarantees. Nothing about holding money, refunds, insurance or payroll. No competitor-named comparisons before review. “Compl” as a name makes none of these claims; the copy must not either. Counsel should confirm the name and the pairing lines do not read as an implied compliance guarantee under the CAP Code.

09Visual direction

Six a.m. on site: the sunrise, kept.

The Solo team already has a sunrise theme and a truck illustration set in production. The masterbrand should live in the same world, so this page is built in it. Tokens below are a proposal to reconcile against the Solo tokens in Confluence, not a replacement for them.

Wordmark direction

Lowercase compl in a warm serif with real weight, so the truncation reads as a decision rather than a typo. The primary device is the truncation itself: explore a ghosted or cut “y” that appears on hover, in motion, or as the app icon’s negative space. Secondary devices to test, one to survive: the “o” drawn as a rising sun (the link back to Solo’s existing theme) and the council’s single tick (reads “done”). Amber-on-plum as the hero pairing; the amber only ever as large type or on the dark ground, never as small text on paper.

Avoid

  • Shields, padlocks, clipboards, magnifying glasses: the compliance clichés.
  • Lowercase-tech gloss, geometric sans, the Tumblr “r” wink.
  • “Compl.” with a full stop, or “COMPL” in body copy.
  • Stock photos of men pointing at laptops.

Lean into

  • The truck set already in production.
  • Real sites at first light; hi-vis as a flash, not a fill.
  • Invoices and deduction statements as design objects.
  • Dry captions in the brand’s own voice; the missing letter as the product promise (“it just happens”), used sparingly.
10The council

Twelve experts, five hats, an honest tie.

On 5 September the brain’s marketing council was convened on this question: Laura Ries, Mark Ritson, David Ogilvy, Sally Hogshead, Margaret Mark, April Dunford, Seth Godin, Rory Sutherland, Rand Fishkin, Katelyn Bourgoin, Melina Palmer and Eugene Schwartz, simulated from their published frameworks and run through de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. They compared Compl with the plain verb Comply, with Valla CIS and with Voila. Unanimous against Valla CIS. Seven to five for Compl over Comply. And a tie on the scorecard that they chose to read out loud rather than hide.

Red hat · gut

  • Compl beats Valla CIS, Voila and Carbon on instinct; nobody defended the current name.
  • The room split on Compl versus Comply between “it owns the stem” (Ries, Hogshead, Fishkin) and “it costs the reader a decode” (Ogilvy, Palmer).
  • Ritson: better on paper, but nobody in the room is a subbie in a van.

Yellow hat · benefits

  • The Intel logic: cut compliance in half and own the stem (Ries).
  • Coined, so protectable as a word mark where Comply was not; exact company name and domain both free or held (Fishkin, Ritson).
  • The missing letter is a story no “CIS-something” competitor has; the name barks less than Comply (Hogshead, Mark).

Black hat · risks

  • Looks like a typo; can be read “incomplete”; hear it and many type “comply” (Palmer, Ogilvy, Bourgoin).
  • The Web-2.0 vowel-drop reading, if the styling lets it (Sutherland, Godin).
  • Phonetic similarity to COMPLY-formative marks is an attorney question; “compl-” is busy in regtech (Ritson, Fishkin).
  • Still fits Hub better than Solo; the headline must do Solo’s work (Dunford, Schwartz).

Green hat · fixes

  • A completion device where the y would sit: a tick, or the sunrise “o”, so the eye reads “done”, not “typo” (Palmer, Ries).
  • A story in the missing letter (Hogshead). The council’s draft was “We dropped the y. You don’t have to ask why.”; the adopted line is Greg’s: “We took the Y out of comply. Because it just happens.”
  • The cue rule: say it before you show it, in every channel (Ogilvy, Schwartz).
  • Catch the leak: buy comply.co.uk; measure “compl solo”, never “compl” (Fishkin).
  • Gate A with two thresholds: say-it-back and spell-it-back (Ritson).
Blue hat · chairman’s recommendation

Adopt Compl as the masterbrand, Compl Solo and Compl Hub as the products, conditional on two gates that close within five working days: a blind customer test with pronunciation first (thirty subbies, ten bookkeepers, four names; Compl must reach at least 85% “comply” on say-it-back after seeing it and at least 80% on spell-it-back after hearing it, with “typo” or “unfinished” absent from the top three associations), and an attorney clearance in classes 9, 35, 36 and 42 that asks specifically about phonetic overlap with COMPLY-formative marks. Keep the entity as Valla CIS Limited, trading as Compl, and reserve “Compl Ltd” at Companies House while it is free.

Read the tie honestly. Compl and Comply score the same total with opposite risk profiles. Compl gives up two points of spelling to gain two points of protectability. The council prefers Compl because the spelling risk is mitigated by things the company controls (the wordmark, the tagline, the audio, the comply.co.uk catch), while Comply’s registrability risk sits with an examiner and with prior owners.

The dissent, kept in

Mark Ritson: “Compl is Comply with the trademark problem swapped for a pronunciation problem. Only the customer knows which is cheaper, so ask thirty.” Hence Gate A, with its two thresholds.

Ogilvy, Palmer, Dunford, Bourgoin, Schwartz preferred the fluency of the plain word and accepted Compl on one condition: the pronunciation is cued in every asset. Hence the cue rule in section 08.

The scored table: Neumeier’s seven criteria, 1 to 5

Twelve lines you can lift

Intel cut Integrated Electronics in half and owned a category. Compl cuts compliance in half. Now give it a hammer.

Laura Ries · positioning, the law of the name

Compl is Comply with the trademark problem swapped for a pronunciation problem. Only the customer knows which is cheaper, so ask thirty.

Mark Ritson · diagnosis before strategy

Five letters fit a van door. Make sure the plumber’s wife can say them, or the van drives past.

David Ogilvy · research, plain English

The missing y is the fascination: “we dropped it because you don’t have to ask why”. Nobody else in CIS has a story in their name.

Sally Hogshead · fascination

Compl barks less than Comply. Pair it with “Sorted” and it stops being an order and becomes a reassurance.

Margaret Mark · brand archetypes

For the bookkeeper, compl- already means compliance. For the subbie it means nothing yet, so the headline does the work.

April Dunford · positioning

A missing letter is a password. The people who know how to say Compl are your first tribe.

Seth Godin · the purple cow

Odd is cheap, ambiguous is expensive. Make the missing letter look like a decision, and Compl becomes a costly signal of confidence.

Rory Sutherland · behavioural economics

Nobody owns “compl” anywhere. Own it, buy comply.co.uk to catch the leak, and measure “compl solo”, never “compl”.

Rand Fishkin · search

The trigger is still thirty per cent gone. “Compl. Sorted.” is short enough to be the reply.

Katelyn Bourgoin · buyer psychology

Compl gives the brain a gap to fill. End the wordmark with a tick and it fills it with “done”, not “typo”.

Melina Palmer · behavioural economics

This market wants to stop worrying, not to admire a name. Say Compl once, spell it once, then sell the relief.

Eugene Schwartz · market awareness

Simulated personas built from each expert’s published work; the full five-hat transcript is kept with the working files, alongside the first run (which assessed the plain verb before the spelling was corrected). Three of the twelve (Ritson, Ogilvy, Fishkin) have no explicit naming doctrine on record, so their lines extend their documented frameworks rather than quote them on naming.

Others do bits of CIS. Nobody does the platform.

A correction to the shorthand: it is not true that nobody else touches CIS. It is true that nobody else is a two-sided, mobile-first platform where a subbie’s invoice lands in the contractor’s workflow. That is the claim to make, and “Compl” makes it without naming a scheme.

12Next fourteen days

From decision to live.

Ordered so that nothing customer-facing is renamed before the two gates are cleared.

  1. Founders decide in principle (this week).Sign-off at the foot of this page. Valla stays as the group and the legal entity; Compl becomes the product masterbrand, subject to the two gates.
  2. Gate A: blind name test (days 1–2).Thirty subbies via the Facebook trade groups and the On the Tools contact, ten bookkeepers via Hub prospects. Three names, one hearing each: spell-back, say-back, 24-hour recall, three associations, first choice.
  3. Gate B: attorney clearance and filings (days 1–5).Search COMPL and COMPL-formative marks in classes 9, 35, 36, 42 (UK, and EU if the roadmap includes Ireland), with named checks on ComplAi, Complir, Comp AI, COMPL-AI, Complyport, ComplyAdvantage, COMPLY and “Comply – Invoice & Wallet”. File the COMPL word mark, a stylised mark, and COMPL SOLO and COMPL HUB. Go/no-go on day 5.
  4. Secure the estate (today).compl.co.uk: auto-renew and transfer lock on now; registrant to Valla CIS Limited once adopted, so the brand’s domain is not held personally. Register compl.uk, complsolo, complhub, complapp, trycompl and getcompl .co.uk. Claim @complsolo, @complhub and @getcompl on Meta, TikTok, YouTube, X and LinkedIn. Open an approach on comply.co.uk and set an expiry watch for 24 October 2026.
  5. Rename the store listings before approval completes.“Compl Solo: CIS invoicing”. Renaming after approval triggers re-review. ASO subtitle and keywords carry CIS, subcontractor, invoice, deduction statement. Rename the Confluence space, Asana project and Slack channel the same day so the internal name dies too.
  6. Wordmark and tokens.Reconcile this page’s palette and type with the Solo tokens in Confluence; draw the truncation as the device; test the rising-sun “o” and the tick; extend to the truck set.
  7. Landing page live two weeks before launch.compl.co.uk: the free-tier hook, the three tabs, the invite loop, the store badges, a CIS deduction calculator as the wedge, and the name spoken in the hero video’s first three seconds.
  8. Creative set against the Claims Register.First Meta and TikTok set under the new name, reviewed with Elena before spend; every asset cues the pronunciation.
